This course is run by a qualified and experienced ergonomist

Preliminary requirement
Each delegate should have access to a copy of ‘Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and amended’ guidance to the regulations published by the Health and Safety Executive (available free online)

Who should attend?
Staff who have been nominated to undertake Manual Handling assessments and wish to gain a good assessor training, as opposed to being just being taught about Manual Handling legislation and compliance

The focus of the course is to be proactive as opposed to being reactive.

Our course covers office, and industrial manual handling

As an assessor you will learn how to?

  • Assess manual handling tasks by understanding ergonomic principles to safe lifting and carrying of objects
  • Understand how injuries occur and what the common type of MH injuries are
  • Legalisation relating to manual handling
  • Key risk factors that operators face
  • How to carry out risk assessments using the MAC tool, LS23 and the Rapid Entire Body Assessment tool
  • How to implement controls to reduce risk
  • Managing the manual handling operation 

To achieve the objectives the course is designed to be practical as possible. To stimulate and encourage proactive behaviour and discussion throughout the date - case studies, videos and demonstrations are utilised.

Our course can be tailor made to those organisations requiring an in house course.

08.45–09.00 Welcome Coffee

09.00–09.30 Introductions and overview of the course.

  • What is a manual handling assessment
  • Overview of the manual handling risk assessment process and a look at different domains

09.30 – 10.15 Legislation and manual handling

10.15–11.00 Manual handling and how the body is affected

  •  How the spine works and what happens to the body when it undertakes muscular work
  • Safe and unsafe lifting techniques

11.00 –11.15 Coffee break

11.15 – 12.00 Manual handling and ergonomic principles and tools

  •  The ergonomic principles relating to manual handling
  •  Using ergonomic tools – introduction to body maps and the REBA tool

11.15 – 12.00 Using the manual handling checklist and understanding the guidance that relate to manual handling operations

12.00 – 12.30 The assessment process and control measures

  •  Using ergonomic principles to achieve a safe lifting technique
  •  Pushing and pulling

12.30 –13:15 Lunch

13.15 –13.30 Introduction to the afternoon practical - good and bad practice

13.30 –14.00 Afternoon practical (1) – manual handling task

  •  Collecting information to assess risk (using the MH risk assessment tool,
  •  How to draw valid and reliable conclusions
  •  Evaluating controls
  •  Completing assessment forms
  •  Managing the assessment process

14.00 –15.00 Afternoon practical (2) – pushing and pulling task

  •  Collecting information to assess risk
  •  How to draw valid and reliable conclusions
  •  Evaluating controls
  •  Completing assessment forms
  •  Managing the assessment process

Afternoon Tea

15.00–16.00 Practical and test

  • Delegates complete a short test and  carry out a series of Manual Handling risk assessments to ensure that he or she fully understands the process of assessment. All those that successfully complete this will be given a Manual Handling assessor certificate. To date nobody has failed the test.

16.00 –16.15 Round up and questions
