How to use MSD risk assessment checklists, ergonomic tools and principles

Preliminary requirement

 Some knowledge of ergonomics and previous risk assessment experience is preferred. If in doubt please contact us.

Delegates are asked to carry out pre-course activities to ensure that the basics of assessments and principles are understood.


Who should attend?

This course is designed for risk assessors that wish to know about the ins and outs of ergonomic risk assessments, how and what tools can be used, and to be able to present his or her findings quantitatively enabling  compelling reports based on scientific fact to be written. 


On the course you will learn how to?

  • Use Musculoskeletal disorder (MSDs) risk assessment checklists (Mac tool, Rapid Upper Limb assessment (RULA) , Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA)and others
  • Use ergonomic tools (anthropometric tables, body discomfort diagrams, force gauges, light meters, noise meters etc)
  • Use ergonomic principles to resolve problems that have been identified using the checklists and tools
  • Use tools competently in a number of domains, and be able to correctly interpret the quantitative data to write compelling reports that are based on scientific principles

To achieve the objectives the course is designed to be practical as possible, and to stimulate and encourage proactive behaviour and discussion throughout the day.

The course can be tailor made to those organisations requiring an in house course.

09.00–09.30   Introductions and discussion of the pre-course activities


09.30 –10.00 Introduction to case studies and overview of the assessment process


10.00–11.45 Using checklists and deciding on most suitable type

  • Preliminary data collection methods
  • Manual handling (Mac Charts, Niosh LE, and calculating forces)
  • Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA)
  • Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA)

11.45 – 12.30 Using different types of ergonomic tools and taking measurements (these tools will be 

  • Anthropometric tables, force gauges, noise and light meters etc

12.30 –13:15 Lunch


13.15 –14.15 Manual handling assessments - (case study Cold Store Warehouse)

  • Using appropriate checklists, tools and principles delegates are shown how to conduct a manual handling assessment
  • Delegates are shown how to calculate push-pull forces (estimate and by using a force gauge)

14.15 –15.30 Static work assessment - case study film archive where staff spend long hours using machines, computers and are prone to a number of MSDs)
