Problem
- A new design had been implemented. Staff reported musculoskeletal pain and discomfort. Two members were found to be stressed, error resulted in a number of ways.
- The company wished an in-depth ergonomic assessment to be carried out
Ergonomic evaluation
- We carried out an ergonomic investigation, using ergonomic methodology, some of which were self-reported. This was then checked against the observations collected from the postural analysis tools.
- The design was evaluated, using anthropometric tables, space analysis, having collected the data we could evaluate the areas where the design failed.
- A physical and a cognitive tasks analysis was undertaken.
- All staff were assessed, those suffering specific pain were assessed and their needs met independently, if the changes or urgency were insufficient to the staff’s new needs
Findings and solutions
Important note
- If the company used the services of a skilled ergonomist with strong design and usability expertise, the cost would have been 10% of what the retrofit to put right the poor design.
- Any design should start with a task analysis, and be followed up with a usability trial. This way an interative design occurs compared toImportant note
